Costumes, Drama, and Precision: How Darts is Set to Conquer the U.S.

Darts, a sport defined by its dazzling costumes, electrifying atmosphere, and razor-sharp precision, is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the United States. Having evolved from a casual English pub pastime in the 19th century to a global spectacle, darts today boasts millions of fans worldwide and offers elite players substantial financial rewards.

As the 2025 World Darts Championship wraps up with an epic final between three-time champion Michael van Gerwen and 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler, the sport’s growing appeal is undeniable. However, in the United States—where an estimated 17 million people play darts recreationally—it still faces hurdles in breaking into the mainstream sports scene.

Eddie Hearn’s U.S. Strategy for Darts

Eddie Hearn, the globally renowned boxing promoter and chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), is leading the charge to bring darts to the forefront of American sports.

Hearn is no stranger to high-stakes promotion. Under his leadership, the PDC has made significant inroads in the U.S., including a sold-out 2023 U.S. Masters at Madison Square Garden. For 2024, he’s expecting an even quicker sell-out as the buzz around darts continues to grow.

“We know the U.S. audience craves dynamic, interactive sports experiences, and darts delivers that in spades,” Hearn said. “It’s more than a game; it’s a show—a full sensory experience with costumes, music, and an atmosphere like no other.”

His ultimate goal? To establish darts as a household name in the U.S., rivaling the popularity of sports like boxing.

The Spectacle of Professional Darts

Modern darts tournaments are a far cry from their humble origins. Today’s events are vibrant, high-energy spectacles where players compete with pinpoint accuracy, cheered on by exuberant crowds often dressed in outlandish costumes.

For those skeptical about darts’ credentials as a sport, Hearn points to the extraordinary skill and mental focus required to perform at the highest level. “The precision and pressure these players handle are unmatched. It’s an incredible display of talent that resonates with fans once they experience it,” he said.

This transformation from casual pub game to global entertainment is at the heart of the PDC’s strategy to reframe darts for new audiences.

Building Infrastructure for U.S. Growth

To achieve sustainable growth in the U.S., the PDC has partnered with the Championship Darts Corporation (CDC), which oversees North American darts. Together, they are focused on creating grassroots programs, professional development opportunities, and expanded media coverage.

Matthew Porter, the PDC’s chief executive, views the U.S. as a land of untapped potential:
“Dartboards are everywhere—homes, pubs, fairs—but our challenge is showing Americans that darts is more than just a casual activity. It’s a professional, audience-driven sport with thrilling competitions.”

Peter Citera, the CEO of the CDC, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the quality of North American players. “Canada already produced a two-time world champion, John Part. The U.S. has immense talent as well, and our mission is to create the pathways that allow them to succeed on the global stage,” Citera said.

The CDC’s junior programs are also fostering a new generation of players. By targeting youth involvement, the organization hopes to build a long-term fanbase and pipeline for professional talent.

The Impact of Luke Littler and Emerging Stars

Luke “The Nuke” Littler, at just 16 years old, is already reshaping the narrative around darts. Littler’s meteoric rise to stardom has not only electrified fans but also inspired young players worldwide.

This “Luke Littler effect” is seen as a crucial catalyst for growing the sport in the U.S. “Imagine finding an American equivalent to Luke Littler. That would revolutionize darts in the States,” Porter said.

Leonard Gates, one of three North American players in the 2025 World Championship, exemplifies the potential for American players to make their mark. Gates, who discovered darts at a bar, now earns a living as a professional player and serves as an inspiration for others considering the leap into professional competition.

Why Darts is Poised to Thrive in the U.S.

Several factors suggest that darts is primed for success in the U.S. market:

  1. Accessible Gameplay: Darts is easy to learn, affordable, and widely played recreationally.
  2. Unique Fan Experience: Combining live sports with costume parties, music, and drinks, darts offers an unmatched entertainment value.
  3. Star Power: Rising stars like Luke Littler and Leonard Gates captivate audiences and draw attention to the sport.
  4. Supportive Infrastructure: Initiatives by the PDC and CDC are building a robust foundation for grassroots and professional growth.

The Role of Broadcast Media

A significant part of the PDC’s strategy involves expanding darts’ television presence in the U.S. Collaborating with major broadcasters, the organization aims to bring the energy and excitement of live darts events to American living rooms.

Hearn believes this will be a game-changer: “Once you see the crowd, hear the music, and witness the precision of the players, you’re hooked. Television can amplify that experience for millions.”

A Global Phenomenon on the Rise

Darts has already achieved global prominence, with sell-out events in Europe and Asia. Now, the PDC and CDC are determined to replicate that success in the U.S. By tapping into the country’s massive recreational player base and showcasing the sport’s vibrant culture, they aim to position darts among America’s top sports leagues.

With its blend of high drama, entertainment, and skill, darts is more than ready to make its mark on the U.S. sports scene.
