Rolls-Royce joins a list of other premium brands making the switch to electric vehicles, such as Volkswagen’s Bentley and Jaguar’s Land Rover. In a statement, it said that its first fully electric-powered car, named Spectre, will land on the market in the fourth quarter of 2023. Tests on the vehicle are expected to begin soon.
“With this new product we set out our credentials for the full electrification of our entire product portfolio by 2030,” said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. “By then, Rolls-Royce will no longer be in the business of producing or selling any internal combustion engine products. It is the beginning of a new legacy for our brand.”
BMW, which owns Rolls-Royce, is yet to set a date by which it will stop producing vehicles that run off of fossil fuels. However, the company has set a goal of 50% electric vehicle production by 2030, with its subsidiary Mini aiming for all-electric by the end of the decade.
Volkswagen’s Bentley is also aiming to go all-electric by 2030, while the Jaguar brand of Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover has its eyes set on 2025.
