Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said he is giving “serious thought” to building a social media platform. However, the billionaire didn’t go into detail on how his hypothetical social media platform would work or how it would look.

Musk’s remark came after he claimed that Twitter, a social media platform that he uses often, doesn’t allow for free speech. Turning to Twitter, Musk said, “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” Musk followed this Tweet by asking whether a new social media platform is needed.

Twitter, however, claims it is committed to freedom of expression.

If the Tesla CEO goes ahead with creating a new social media platform, he would join a growing portfolio of tech companies that pride themselves on championing free speech and hope to attract users who feel their opinions are suppressed on mainstream platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
