Joining ABC: The First Big Break (1974-1990s)

In 1996, The Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC for a staggering $19 billion. The deal made ABC a subsidiary of Disney, bringing Iger into the Disney fold.

Rather than being phased out in the merger, Iger’s leadership skills impressed Disney’s then-CEO Michael Eisner. By 1999, he was named president of Walt Disney International, where he was tasked with expanding Disney’s global reach.

His biggest break came in 2000 when he was promoted to Disney’s President and Chief Operating Officer, making him the second-in-command to Eisner. This put him in prime position to eventually take over the top job at the company.
